Paris was certainly not the first city in France to be served by train. But it is for a more remarkable title and destiny that the capital was called by becoming, with six large stations, a world exception. At the heart of the great national rail network, it accelerated its development as much as it was shaped by it. Firstly by its "head stations", known to all, but also by those, more discreet, built for a Universal Exhibition, for local service or the transport of goods. From depots to disappeared lines and the "Petite Ceinture", not to mention forgotten or never even built stations, the transport saga, on the edge of Greater Paris, continues to be written.
