In 1952, Byrrh, which was heavily involved in cycling events, particularly the Tour de France, designed a fleet of seven ‘tonneaux roulants’ to promote its ‘tonic wine’. The brand turned to coachbuilder J.B Chalaud of Aubervilliers, with whom it had already worked. The barrel-shaped body is made from aluminium panels. BYRRH: aperitif wine with cinchona. Simon and Pallade Violet were two brothers who worked as travelling salesmen and haberdashers in the Roussillon region during the Second Empire. In 1866, they decided to set up their own company in Thuir, and began trading in wines, mainly imported from Spain. A miracle cure. At the time, table wine was widely consumed throughout France, and to stand out from his competitors, Simon Violet developed a new drink made from a blend of several local vintages, aromatic plants and cinchona bark. In a way, this aperitif was the alcoholic ancestor of energy drinks.
