The purpose of the sappers in the line infantry regiments, equipped with their axes, was to prepare for ambushes and destroy barriers, walls and other obstacles that could hinder the advance of their regiment.
The 3rd Infantry Regiment is the descendant of the old Piedmont Regiment created in 1569.
It is one of the oldest infantry regiments in the French army and has an excellent record of service.
Under the First Empire, the regiment's head of column, sappers, drummers and musicians wore a red uniform with celestial blue highlights, very different from the rest of the regiment.
The sappers, four in number per battalion and formed into a platoon, precede the drums and music.
They had the honour of leading the march and marched proudly with an axe on their shoulder, wearing a furry cap and protected by their white skin tabler.
