The chasseurs à cheval were formed to carry out intervention work. They were used for attacks on the flanks of enemy armies, reconnaissance, escorting convoys and, if necessary, charging to support the whole troop.
This regiment is the former Picardy regiment.
It was formed in 1779 with four squadrons of chasseurs from the former Royal Legion, drawn from four dragoon regiments into which they had been transferred when the legion was disbanded in 1776.
It became the régiment de chasseurs des Alpes in 1784 and was given the number 1.
In 1788, six regiments of dragoons, which were much older than it, were transformed into a regiment of chasseurs, making it rank seventh and it was given the name of chasseurs de Picardie, a name it lost in 1791, keeping only its number.
This regiment fought in all the wars of the Republic and the Empire.
