The dragons were a regiment of infantrymen who were given horses. They were highly mobile and armed both as infantrymen and as cavalrymen, which meant they could be used for a variety of actions in the army.
This regiment was created in 1635 under the name of Souvré, becoming Anjou in 1647 and Orléans in 1660, a name it retained until 1791.
At that time, it was given the number 13 in all the large cavalry regiments.
In 1803, it became the 22nd dragoon regiment and was disbanded on 14 May 1814.
It fought in the campaigns of the Empire, from 1805 to 1817 in the Grande Armée. From 1803 to 1808 in Spain, in 1813 in Saxony and in France in 1814.
