The cuirassiers were shock cavalry regiments generally intended to break through the squares of enemy troops and often employed at critical moments in battle.
The origins of this regiment go back a long way. A corps of mounted troops created in 1635 under the name of the Cardinal's Dragon, which became His Eminence's Horse Rifles in 1638, then the King's Horse Rifles in 1643, became the King's Cavalry Regiment in 1846. It retained this name until 1791.
At that time, because of its seniority, it was given the number 6 among the regiments of large cavalry.
Following the consuls' decrees of 23 December 1802, it was reintegrated into the cuirassiers regiment, which was renewed and increased, and where it retained the 8th rank.
As a cuirassiers regiment, it took part in the 1805 campaign in the army of Italy and, from 1807 onwards, in all those of the Grande Armée 1809 1812 1813 1814 and 1815.
